Troy Johnston found CrossFit after a lifetime of competitive individual and team sports, and a seven year personal health and fitness journey. The inevitable shift came in January of 2017 while Troy searched for a more challenging and more convenient way to train. Troy immediately fell in love with CrossFit because of it’s constantly varying programming, it’s physical and mental challenges, and the cultivation of community he had only seen in sport.
Troy’s coaching and leadership experience stems back to his undergraduate years as the captain and coach of the his collegiate rugby team. As a player-coach, Troy learned imperative lessons about leadership, while being responsible for the coaching of all fundamentals and strategy, as well as strength and conditioning. As Troy pursued a Master’s of Communication in Organizational Leadership, he volunteered to coached a functional fitness class at the recreation center of the university he attended, while also assisting the CrossFit gym he attended daily.
The challenges Troy faced after finding CrossFit inspired him to re-evaluate his professional path. Troy always had a passion for serving others and helping them reach their most authentic selves. Troy decided he would continue his personal growth and professional ability to serve others by pursuing his CF-L1 Certification. After that, he had the tools, and needed a place to use them.
Troy’s search for information, knowledge, and continued professional growth led him all the way from Pittsburgh to us, here, at Illumine (ok, his girlfriend moved here too!). Troy hopes to impart as a coach, that through CrossFit, you can learn valuable lessons about self-awareness, mindfulness, goal setting, humility, and of course, leading a happy and healthy life.
Make sure you give him a warm welcome as he starts appearing as our newest Coach in Training in your classes!
